Event details

‘Sheens is an original composer, one whose melodic and rhythmic ideas championed narrative over virtuosity. Sheens weaves a little minimalist magic.’ All About Jazz

New-York based Matt Sheens has made impressive progress after relocating to the U.S just a few years ago and winning a Downbeat Student Award in 2009. His 2013 debut album Every Eight Seconds and follow up Untranslatable demonstrated Matt’s high degree of ability as a composer and pianist, which saw him named as a finalist in the prestigious Freedman Jazz Fellowship. Matt returns to Australia to launch his most recent album, Cloud Appreciation Day, which draws on West African grooves and 20th Century poetry. The album was made possible by the APRA/ AMCOS Professional Development Awards

Support Act: Mary Rapp (8pm)

Mary combines cello, voice, brute strength, rock emotion and noisy catharsis into a musical amalgam that defies easy categorisation. The SMH said: "Rapp had an instinct for being taciturn and pithy; for making the music gossamer light or adding phenomenal weight and vigour, using extraordinarily few notes”. She is an artist to watch.
