In June this year, Yohai Cohen officially launched his new 4-piece Moroccan Jewish music project with sold out concerts in Melbourne and Sydney, captivating crowds from start to finish with an exciting scope of energising, feet-stomping songs of celebration, melancholy hymns and outstanding musicianship. Improvisation plays a key part in their animated and vivid performance. Native of Safed and student of Adnan Baraky and Zohar Fresco, Yohai Cohen has been internationally recognised for his musicianship. In recent years he has traveled extensively in Morocco, mastering the rich cultural tapestry of traditional and popular music. He is now based in Melbourne. Yohai performed at WOMADelaide 2017 as a special guest with The Piyut Ensemble and has also performed and recorded with many important musical projects and outstanding musicians in Israel and abroad, such as Yemen Blues, Eyal Sela, Idan Raichel, Haim Luk (New Jerusalem Orchestra), Omer Avital, Shem Tov Levi, Lior Elmaliach, and more. Alma Zygier Alma Zygier has been fascinated by the pre war era of Jazz; the singers, Ella Fitzgerald, Bessie Smith, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Memphis Minnie, & the Broadway composers who largely provided the repertoire, Gershwin, Kern, Porter, Rodgers. She has a voice from another era & brings an emotional maturity to her performance that belies her years.
