Event details

the body is a pane of glass Callum Harper, Jonathan Homsey and Ruth O’Leary Curated by Siobhan Sloper LoopVideo @ Loop Project Space and Bar November 15, 2017 'the body is a pane of glass' is a collection of video works that looks at artists who use their own body to critique and challenge traditional ideas of love, sex and heteronormative culture. This event is part of Loop’s ongoing Love is Love campaign which aims to build a community of artists, activist, academics and marriage equality supporters committed to sharing love and supporting the LBGTIQ+ community. Callum Harper works with notions around LGBTIQ+ culture, and combines discourse around reality and online life to create dialogue around the disparate differences of communication IRL vs URL. Primarily working with text, video and performance. Harper’s ':can i get away with this?', is a referential, autobiographical two year collection of personal experiences within Northern Europe, regarding LGBTIQ+ acceptance on a wider spectrum. The breadth of dialogue extends from clubs, unions, politicians and Grindr Users, to create ‘mindsets’ relaying a cacophony of positive and negative viewpoints to debate cultural acceptance. Harper holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Monash University in Caulfield, Australia, and a Master of Fine Arts from Konstfack in Stockholm, Sweden. Jonathan Homsey is an American queer artist of Chinese and Syrian heritage. His work '囚人(Shūjin)' inspects the stoicism in the professional workplace. Using his own body as protagonist he contrasts the quotidian, mechanical work environment against the serene practices of tai chi and qigong. The voiceover takes excerpts from Virginia Woolf's 'On Being Ill'. Homsey has a Bachelor of Dance from the Victorian College of the Arts and a Master of Arts from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Ruth O'Leary is a Melbourne based artist working with film, photography and performance installation. Her practice interlaces feminist, subjective, spatial ideas played out through performance. Her work 'Peaches' examines heteronormative culture. She has a Bachelor of Fine Art from RMIT University and Fine Art Honours from Monash University. Solo exhibitions include 'The Transit Lounge', TCB Art Inc, 2016 and 'Little Windows', Bus Projects, 2015. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions including 'Benglis 73/74', curated by Geoff Newton, Sutton Projects, TCB Arts Inc and Neon Parc in 2014. For every house wine or beer sold, $4 of every drink will be donated to Rainbow Families Victoria. Please be advised, some works contain coarse language and mild nudity. https://jonathanhomsey.com/ http://www.rutholeary.com.au/ https://vimeo.com/callumharper
