THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY launches its debut album at The Toff this November. With support on the night from HOWLITE and KELLY DAY (BROADS), plus live projections by JEAN POOLE and other special guests, this show is not to be missed. The 12-track album, Vanishing Point, fulfils the promise of live shows that audiences have called “achingly beautiful", “divine", “so powerful and gorgeous!", "truly incredible” and “an emotional experience”. ABOUT THE ALBUM Inside a mysterious radio tower on the wild coast of Tasmania, a boy finds a book with his initials on the cover. To his alarm and fascination, it maps out his entire life – from birth to death. As he reads, the radio beacon crackles to life and “a sea of voices fills the room”, calling him to let go of his need for certainty - to see the power in his wildness, to give in to the wonder and confounding complexity of life. So begins this epic album. The 12 tracks on Vanishing Point read like a series of short stories. Incorporating myth and magic realism, they paint a picture of the world that is both engrossing and unsettling. For Matt Wicking, “Lyrically, the album deals with big themes: from the hollowing effects of capitalism and consumption, to the bitterness and melancholia of living with environmental collapse. I’m particularly interested in the points where human and non-human nature connect, where the lines blur and dissolve.” That’s how it is in the world of The General Assembly; children give up on their human kin and return to nature, heroes and frauds alike are swallowed up by the sun, mysterious books offer glimpses of the future, and disembodied voices sing vital truths. While the song-writing draws from the deep well of blues and folk storytelling, sonically it soars. The production by D.A.Calf blends reverb-drenched guitars, synth and mellotron in swelling soundscapes. Dynamic rhythms and moods are tied together by Wicking’s voice – shifting from whisper to howl, from soulful baritone to soaring falsetto.
