Event details

Yarra City Council present Stolen Generations Marker Fundraiser Saturday 2 December Featuring DAN SULTAN ELLA HOOPER KIRA PURU CLAIRY BROWNE KUTCHA EDWARDS UNCLE JACK CHARLES MC BRIAN NANKERVIS Acclaimed singer/songwriter Dan Sultan and special guests are taking over The Croxton Bandroom for a very special one-off gig on Saturday 2 December. Dan, who’s fourth album Killer debuted at #5 and is up for three 2017 ARIA Awards, will be joined by a deluge of musical talent for a unique and soulful night, with all funds raised dedicated the recognition of a subject that is very dear to his heart, the Stolen Generations. Dan’s family has been touched by the Stolen Generations and his song-writing often bears the marks of this – in the weary strength of his voice, the raw soulfulness of his phrasing and the redemptive longing of his lyrics. Those who know and love Dan’s music will have picked up on his connection to the Stolen Generations in Kimberly Calling and also the beautiful ode, Roslyn. 100% of proceeds from this event will go towards the development of a Stolen Generations Marker and garden in Gertrude Street, Fitzroy. Dan Sultan says “I’m really excited to play this fundraiser. It will be a very special night for me and my family. To be able to contribute to the construction of a very special marker to acknowledge the Stolen Generations is both a pleasure and a privilege. While the marker will never take away the trauma and pain that so many people have experienced directly and indirectly, it still symbolises the strength and courage they have shown in their pursuit for justice and inner peace.” Joining Dan on this night of storytelling and song will be Ella Hooper, Kira Puru, Clairy Browne, Kutcha Edwards, Uncle Jack Charles and MC Brian Nankervis. About the Stolen Generations Marker A Stolen Generations Marker is being developed by Yarra City Council in consultation with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. The marker will be a public art piece and healing garden dedicated to the struggles and strengths of the Stolen Generations and their families. It will be installed in Atherton Gardens, Fitzroy - a place of deep significance to the Aboriginal community as it was the place where many Stolen Generations survivors and other Aboriginal people found family, culture and community for the first time. The Marker will stand as a reminder of the impacts of past racist government policies that continue to impact the Aboriginal community today. It is intended to honour the struggles of the Stolen Generations as well as acknowledge the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, communities, clans and groups who seek to heal from the past. This is a crucial step for collective healing. The artist and design of the Stolen Generations Marker will be announced soon. The Marker is expected to be unveiled in May 2018.
