Event details

On Friday 9th March, Crown Ruler are serving up a monumental batch for you Melbourne maniacs to feast your ears on – Ata Kak (GHA), Peanut Butter Wolf (USA), Esa Williams (ZAF) & our own Umut & Big Rig are all throwing down at The Night Cat for a once in a lifetime dance. If you haven’t heard of Ata Kak then you gotta up your game on lo-fi dance-rap-afro-pop. Ata Kak (which in Akan society roughly means ‘small twin’) hails from Ghana where he created his infamous album ‘Obaa Sima’ on cassette tape. 8 years later, one Brian Shimkovitz bought a copy at a roadside stall in Cape Coast and it blew his mind - consequently inspiring the beginning of the ‘Awesome Tapes From Africa’ label. A king of Atari Notator software and Twi rap, Ata Kak now tours the world with his band, and we are lucky enough to host him in the sunburnt country. From a different corner of the beats and rhymes wurld comes professor Peanut Butter Wolf – the head honcho of an essential household name in hip hop, the Stones Throw label from Los Angeles. PB’s vision has fostered an unparalleled home for the tunes of MCs, producers and bands that we all know and love; J Dilla, Madlib, MF Doom, Georgia Anne Muldrow and Knxwledge to name only a handful. His film ‘Our Vinyl Weighs A Tonne’ is a prized piece of the hip hop culture puzzle and his AV DJ performances always rock the house with neck breakers, history and new champion sounds on the block. Additional to leading Ata Kak’s band, South African native and Worldwide FM presenter Esa Williams will bring his otherworldly afro-infused dance tracks to the party to warm things up correctly. With of course, the dance floor dedications of our own Crown Ruler family Big Rig & Umut to fill all the gaps. We could keep harping on but the bottom line is – you know what to do!
