Event details

BACK TO THE CORNER featuring Painters & Dockers, The Celibate Rifles & X Three legendary Australian bands — evergreen party-starters Painters & Dockers, iconic rock miscreants The Celibate Rifles and Aussie punk legends X — are joining forces for the first time ever for ‘Back to the Corner’: a celebration of rock’n’roll, community and the vagaries of time. Inspired by a 1986 gig poster detailing a run of shows at The Corner that included all three legendary bands playing the same week, ‘Back To The Corner’ jumps in the DeLorean and uses the flux capacitor to punch through the space-time continuum and brings three acts that helped define the past three decades of Australian music together for an amazing, one-night-only super mini-festival. Painters & Dockers need little introduction. Led by rock’n’roll pied piper Paul Stewart, the Melbourne legends have penned all-time Australian classics like ‘Die Yuppie Die’, ‘Nude School’ and ‘You’re Going Home In the Back of a Divi Van’, released six albums of whip-smart rock’n’roll, and, to this day, remain one of Australia’s most beloved live acts. The Celibate Rifles, meanwhile, are one of the most critically beloved rock bands in Australian history, with Damian Lovelock’s irascible crew responsible for the garage-punk classic “Johnny”, and nine studio albums (including the timeless Blind Ear) that have inspired generations of musicians to push the boundaries of rock’n’roll. As for X, few bands have ever had the strength and power to channel the dissatisfaction and fury of the Steve Lucas and Ian-Rilen-led punk icons. Their first three studio albums — X-Aspirations (1979), At Home With You (1985) and And More (1988)— remain punk classics, while 2011’s X-Spurts recorded after Rilen’s death, proved a formidable comeback. To this day, they’re a live act par excellence, intimidating and entertaining in a way only Steve Lucas knows how. ‘Back to the Corner’ will feature all three iconic bands headlining on the Corner’s main stage, while a range of excellent young local acts inspired by the three legendary headliners — including Househats, The Demon Parade and Face Face — will be rotating across the Corner’s second stage. ‘Back to the Corner’ takes place — in a move that will shock no one — at Melbourne’s beloved Corner Hotel on Saturday May 19… and prove that Doc and Marty were morons for not just jumping a year ahead to check out some of the best home-grown talent imaginable. 32 years later, the chance to rectify that is at hand.
